The Departure of Starman

The David Bowie exhibit ran from September of 2014 through early January of 2015 in Chicago at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. My wife and I reserved tickets to go this wonderful interactive display of his legacy. We enjoyed it very much. An amazing exhibit!

Mr Bowie recently celebrated his 69th birthday and released a new album. However, sad news came this morning. After battling cancer for a year and a half, he has left the world. Tears dripped down my cheeks. I began to reflect on all of the music and art he left behind.

It suddenly became clear to me that he authorized this traveling art exhibit as a walking memorial or even a wake for us to celebrate his legacy. He knew already. In his poetic way, he timed it all right. Perhaps based on the timeline his doctors gave him, he celebrated Christmas, New Years Eve, the release of his final album, his last birthday and even the link to the video below as his farewell to his fans.

I think he said goodbye to us all recently and for the last year and a half but we just were blinded by all of his hints. I wasn’t prepared for this but I am still sad. May he live forever in the afterlife as Ziggy Stardust and play with the Spiders From Mars….

October is an Adrenaline Rush………for me

295745_10150364006404670_1254209096_n

October is my favorite month for many reasons. I look forward to it every year! I was married in October. We’re celebrating our third anniversary. But I really love Autumn…the beautiful colors, the dry leaves crunching under my feet, the cool crisp air and the smell of wood burning in a fireplace! My dad told me that he has had fires in the outdoor fireplace frequently lately and he loves the smell of cherry wood burning!!! His birthday is in October as well as my best friend Dave and my sister-in-law April. However, it comes down to this:

Watch out! They’re coming for you! Beware! Danger! Don’t look under the bed! Halloween season is finally here!

My favorite holiday of the year is full of ghosts and goblins. Things that go bump in the night. There are decorations everywhere. Neighbor’s turn their front yards into creepy cemeteries. New scary movies begin to hit the theaters. Of course, I really love monster movies or anything terrifying can make a great popcorn flick.

The music is what stands out above all, for me. Without a good soundtrack, horror films, would have less tension. The frightening noises totally set the mood. The film “Halloween” has simple but necessary music that is atmospheric to the stalking nature of the story. Speaking of atmospheric music, I listen to bands like White Zombie, Black Sabbath, Type O Negative, Megadeth and Nine Inch Nails. They always seem to put me in the mood this time of year.

Yes, I am obsessed with the holiday of Halloween and the music that goes a long with it. Perhaps I am deranged like the title of the same word suggests in a David Bowie song. I mean I love dark themes. I even write dark poetry usually when I am listening to bone chilling music from soundtracks to films like “Lost Highway” or “Natural Born Killers.” A philosopher once said, “Darkness Within Darkness is the gateway to all understanding.” Am I depressed? No, I just like the odd things. What is considered normal can sometimes bore me.

Only this time of year can you go into the homes of complete strangers, where they welcome you and even better, they give you candy! It’s not that often you can bump into ghouls, zombies and ghosts while riding the bus or walking down the street. Dressing up and pretending to be someone or something else is truly fun and can only be experienced when the fall-time arrives.

Anyway, Halloween is a weird time and exciting time. The music, the movies, the trick or treating- all of it is unique. I’m a very normal person, but starting at the end of August every year I get this crazy rush of excitement and I start counting down the days until Oct. 31st. I decorate my house, go to pumpkin patches etc. I just really get into the Halloween spirit! I can remember always being like this since I was little. I think I was born this way. Everyone thinks I’m a little crazy!!!!! what do you think? You decide…

To all my spooky fun-loving readers out there- enjoy the music and all of that good stuff happening this month!

HAPPY (early) HALLOWEEN!

Pass the CAN…….man

3837089_orig

In 1971; a West German experimental band, called CAN, released a record entitled “Tago Mago.” Think Primal Scream or David Bowie or Yes and Genesis or even Radiohead when drawing for a frame of reference that provided a major influence on those artists. It was a prototype and a blueprint for so many talented groups out there today.

This was years ahead if its time. Amazing progressive music! It's psychedelic man! It might feeling annoying to a casual listener. But it is executed quite brilliantly. I highly recommend it! But why?

There's a lot of cool stuff going on in this record. There's repetitive percussive cycles, improvisation, jam sessions, intense energy and funky beats. Atmospheres and colorful explorations that feel sharp, intense and unsettling.

It's hard to predict where this album, “Tago Mago,” is going and where it will take you. I mean there is some serious avant Garde territories it takes the listener to. You might even lose touch with reality upon hearing this one. Go for it.

After you hear it, give it a couple more listens and you'll be amazed at how accessible and fun CAN really is. Then check out some more of their stuff.

Peace outC-Note
