Soul Healing Music

I was in the car driving home from work earlier this evening and I started to cry. Emotions began to amplify themselves within my mind. Life, beauty and death surrounded me. Why?

It was the powerful music I was listening to. I’ve been playing this album for over a month now, ever since it was released. Tonight I came to the conclusion that this was spiritual therapy. In fact, not only am I dedicating this blog entry to my niece Samantha, I am proclaiming that a certain album by a certain pair of artists is the most surprising, astonishing and inspiring one of 2016. In my opinion, of course.

This is a personal choice for me. I was going to do my usual countdown of top 10 favorite albums of the year but when a series of songs feel good on my ears and brings me to a place of overwhelming joy and sadness and can make me cry because I am suddenly appreciating everything around me, then I know this is the one to gravitate towards as my favorite album of the year. So let me get right to it.

The artist is Phantogram. They are an American music duo from New York. Josh Carter does vocals and guitars while Sarah Barthel provides vocals and keyboards. Both of them are unbelievable at what they do.

You could define their music in a number of ways. Lets just say they fall under four major categories. Dream pop, trip hop, electronica and “Shoe gaze”could aptly describe them. I love their awesome rhythms, guitars that swirl, keyboards that transport me to outer space, voices that echo and vibrate and lyrics that move through me.

Their October 7th release of the record, simply titled Three, is something that I can’t seem to play enough of. The songs spin around in my head and they won’t let go of me. I have surrendered to their addictive sounds.

This album, ironically, received mediocre reviews from several online sources. I am not one of them. I can’t explain why there are so many negative and poor reviews but that just doesn’t seem to matter. Perhaps I am sentimental when it comes to heartbreaking songs about losing someone close and dear to you.

I have experienced much tragedy this year. I took group fitness instructor courses and attempted to pass a certification test TWICE and FAILED both times. I lost 2 of my grandmothers within the same week, believe it or not. My wife and I had a miscarriage earlier last summer, which was a deep and personal tragedy. I had several battles with depression as well. So maybe this record speaks to me in a really strong way. Sadness, melancholy and panic attacks surround my soul even as i go through the process of healing.

My niece and I connect in a really special way. We are like kindred spirits when it comes to words, poetry and music and I really believe that she will love this album. Its an engaging listen for the ears and the brain. I think the songs punch pretty hard right into the heart. They help someone like me cope with loss and failure. The songs reassure me that I am not alone trying to sort out my sensitive feelings in this world of opinions, hatred and jealousy. I reflect on the beauty that is all over me when I play these songs.

How can I put this? Its one of the best bands you never heard of. They aren’t quite mainstream but that is just fine with me. The mood of this record is deep, raw and real. I won’t go into great details anymore. I can only provide you with a video and trust that faith and hope will take you on this fantastic musical journey.

I highly recommend you listen to (and watch) this:

A Dreamy night at The Vic

image

I really love indie rock music! Something moody and hypnotic is pleasant on my ears.

Intricate guitar jams mixed with a steady drumbeat and angelic female voices in harmony are the essence of what my wife and I experienced last night

WARPAINT is the name of the band that I truly enjoy following. Four young ladies from Los Angeles make up this dream pop group. Their style of music melodies calm my nerves on any day. Sunday night at the Vic Theater was no exception to that mellow feeling.

Strobe lights, stage lighting, lots and lots of lights were draped on the stage & certainly giving off calm red and blue colors. A shadowy collage of the four ladies were on display on the backdrop cloth. Fog set a gloomy atmosphere allowing unique shadows to be cast.

This vaudeville theater had spectacular acoustics. Perfect setting for this band. The keyboards and synthesizers blended well with the chill vibe among the 1,000 of us spectators. Vocals were ran through real cool echoey distortion pedals that had a deep distinct 80’s sound.

They engaged the crowd and jumped around the stage at times. I was reminded of The Cure with female vocals and I fell madly in love with my wife all over again. Everything was in its right place last night with some Angry Orchard Cider by my side and breathtaking trip rock in my brain in Chi Town.

Surrealistic Lyrics For The Unwritten Song

no-lyf-without-music-no-music-3d-no-life-24455532-1632-12241.jpg

uncontrollable urge
to de-evolve
ten years after
i wanted to change
the world
throwing cream
in a white room

keeping it healthy
with warpaint
ultraviolence
on the west coast
it’s too true
under these hands
this screen shot
of swans
i just don’t understand
the spoons

what color is the blood
of a sunbathing animal?
a soft morning phase
don’t let it go
beneath a hundred waters
down from the rafters
time for a last call
during the midnight sun
cuz it ain’t all flowers
who’s producing you?

the circle is wide
making my head sing
pure stuff
love my body to death
lost in a reverse dream
guilty of everything i love
in a transparent world

all is clear
in my forest
throw my clothes
on the floor
and scream
hallelujah

so……who gets the references????

Katy Restored My Innocence

image

Enormous stadium
Blasting
pounding
music

Thousands of flashlights
Emitting from smartphones
Gigantic colorful balloons
Glitter everywhere
Fireworks

Clapping hands
Dancing in place by our seats
Jumping up and down
Like giddy children

Wild outfits
Little girls with wings
Pizza and Abe Lincoln?
What’s Gluten?

Shiny guitar strumming

Glamorous costume changes
Everything is a prism
Camera phones
Coca cola
Intimacy
Love of her crowd

Told us how she went
For a bike ride around
“Our city of Chicago”

Selfies with Katy and the crowd
Birthday party with a member of the audience

Egyptian feel
Kitty cats
Glow in the dark
3D glasses
Moms & Daughters
Doing the WAVE
Chanting “Katy! Katy! Katy!”
Screaming
10 year old girls’
energy all over
me

“But What’s Gluten?”

Brightly connected
A thrill ride
Awesome sauce

Got home at 1:00 a.m.
And was
Still WIDE AWAKE!!!

Playlist For February

160852508

Or better known as, a mix of songs that represent being in love, out of love or just surrendering to the mood of this month. Valentines Day is certainly a widely celebrated holiday every year with chocolate, roses, wine, movies, kisses and MUSIC! It occurs right in the middle too so this day is surrounded by love and the lack of it. People fall in love and breakup too. Or there are plenty of people (I used to be one of them) who hate this month because greetings cards remind them how much love can stink. But I think in general, its a good month. It can be cold and snowy for sure but it also reminds us that we’re halfway through winter and Spring is just around the corner.

So I have a playlist that depicts many emotions that I display this month. I sympathize for friends, family, my wife and for myself. I feel love and gratitude and that mystery of the tremendous feeling of love that extends way beyond puppy love and crushes. Brotherly love, amazing friendships and being alive. Enough babble. Here it is:

1. Slide by The Goo Goo Dolls
The guitar strumming and romantic lyrics are lively and upbeat. Though it may seem strange that this song’s words are actually about a young couple thinking about an abortion. But it’s still good.

2.Home by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros
this really is a sweet song

3. It’s True That We Love One Another The White Stripes
Here we get a snippet of the relationship between Jack White and his drummer, Meg. The mood of the song is whimsical with Jack, Meg and a British singer named Holly Golightly taking turns with childish punches.

4. Maps Yeah Yeah Years
Highly emotional song from Karen O and the gang

5. Linger The Cranberries
(see a previous “feature review” of this song here at my blog)

6. Sometimes My Bloody Valentine
(a classic song from a stupendous album)

7. Please, Please, Please Let Me The Smiths
Captivating and haunting, this is a classic Smiths track

8. Anyone Else But You The Moldy Peaches
Quirky, cute, simple and romantic, this duet always finds a way into your head. “Anyone Else But You” was also covered by Michael Cera And Ellen Page in the 2007 hit film Juno.

9. Crazy Love Van Morrison
you gotta love Van

10. Can’t Take My Eyes Off You Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons
perhaps this artists greatest tune ever

11. Head Over Feet Alanis Morissette
While she is usually spitting on men who have damaged her throughout this album, she takes a turn on this song. However, she still manages to say, “It’s all your fault.” Such Classic Alanis.

12. Son Of A Preacher Man Dusty Springfield
I always loved her voice and this song

13. Saw Red Sublime
This song was released in 1994 before Sublime or No Doubt were known by much of anyone outside of the Southern Cal. music scene. Lead singer Brad Nowell dated Gwen Stefani for a time before making this song.

14. I Hate The Way You Love The Kills
Distorted guitar and anti-Valentine’s Day lyrics,
this song is a perfect representation of a typical Kills song.

15. All I Want Is You Barry Louis Polisar
As soon as you get past the cheesiness of this song, featured on the “Juno” soundtrack, you realize it’s just great feel good music. It also kind of makes you want to square dance.

16. My Girl THE TEMPTATIONS
makes me smile and want to dance as well

17. These Arms Of Mine Otis Redding
powerfully moving song

18. Pictures Of You The Cure
this was an intensely fine moment for Robert Smith

19. Everlong Foo Fighters
heart and soul man

20. The Scientist Coldplay
The dense combination of Chris Martin’s voice and simplistic piano tempo makes “The Scientist” one of the band’s greatest ballads and one of the greatest ballads in general, maybe.

peace out c-note

Release My Demons….Please!

I am melancholy right now. I have a friend that got angry with me. I threw her under the bus and embarrassed her. Then she got even more upset and denied me a gift and de-friended me on facebook. Life can really suck sometimes. But it is through music that my soul can be heard. My three nieces performed this song on Christmas Eve before my fight with my friend. They did an awesome job! It was stunning to watch them sing, play guitar and keyboard like that and do it with passion and pretty harmony. I enjoyed videotaping it. But now I am reminded of its profound meaning. The girls know what it is like to be human and have real pain and emotions that we tend to bury, hide and ignore. We all make mistakes. We all deserve a second chance. But we all must learn to forgive ourselves. We cannot let the sins and the black coins of our life fill up the jar of our minds and soul or else there will be no more room for love.

All I WANT IS TO LOVE AND BE LOVED IN RETURN….MY NIECES SHOW ME THAT EVERY TIME I SEE THEM. THANK YOU!

These are the lyrics to the songs, “Demons,” from the band Imagine Dragons

When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold

When your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail
Are the worst of all
And the blood’s run stale

I wanna hide the truth
I wanna shelter you
But with the beast inside
There’s nowhere we can hide

No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide

Curtain’s call
Is the last of all
When the lights fade out
All the sinners crawl

So they dug your grave
And the masquerade
Will come calling out
At the mess you’ve made

Don’t wanna let you down
But I am hell bound
Though this is all for you
Don’t wanna hide the truth

No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide

They say it’s what you make
I say it’s up to fate
It’s woven in my soul
I need to let you go

Your eyes, they shine so bright
I wanna save that light
I can’t escape this now
Unless you show me how

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide

Here is an acoustic version of the song which is heaven to my ears:

….and here are my awesome nieces; Amanda, Sydney and Sam. This is their version that prompted me to write this blog entry (a baby cries in the beginning):

BRAVO LADIES!!!
